Set into a west facing slope overlooking the Göta River Valley, an 87 meter long building volume houses 14 assisted living apartments (LSS). With its distinctive timber architecture, the building is anchored in the landscape and opens each home toward the river view, where residents connect with the outdoors through a private terrace or stair.

The site lies in a green and rural part of Surte, and despite the building’s length, it blends into the surroundings. By breaking the volume into a rhythmic zigzag form, the house is perceived as a cluster of smaller units rather than one long and impersonal façade.

The architecture carries a dual ambition: to create pleasant, high quality homes for the residents while also giving the site a unique identity that contributes to Surte as a whole. The housing follows the framework of a traditional LSS facility, intended for people who need a moderate level of staff support.
The 14 studio apartments, each with its own kitchen and bathroom, offer the possibility of independence and the freedom to choose the degree of social interaction.

At the northern end of the building are technical rooms, storage, a recycling room, and staff facilities. This is also where the communal area is located, the heart of the residence, where residents and staff come together for theme evenings and discussions on the development of the home.

The project’s greatest challenge has been to adapt the building to the steep terrain while ensuring a strong character and high residential quality. The work has been carried out in close collaboration with Serneke and Ale Municipality.
