The commission for the extension and conversion of Fryshuset (a cold store warehouse) in the harbour of Gothenburg into offices was won in an invited competition.

For more than a century, the old building has been continually extended. Consequently, the exterior is a patchwork of styles and the interior a mesh of superimposed loadbearing structures. Making sense of the building, in visual and organizational terms, was the main challenge of the competition. We proposed a new logic by moving the main entrance to the new extension and connecting it to the centre of the building with an escalator. New connections were created in a cruciform distributive core. The competition became an examination of the core elements of modern architecture; structure, material, proportion, light and building systems.
