Villa Lyckan is a summer residence on Instön, just west of Marstrand on the west coast of Sweden. The main house is the first of a group of houses planned to be built adjacent to each other on the property. On the ground floor, the living room and kitchen are arranged in a row along the house’s western side. Centrally located in the room is a fireplace that supports parts of the roof structure and a chimney that extends beyond the roofline on the long side of the house. The structure of the second floor is separated by a gap from the outer wall, adding extra spaciousness to the elongated room.
Under the ridge of the roof is a second floor that is efficiently planned with several sleeping areas and a second living room inside a spacious dormer window facing east.
The interior of the house is clad in light birch plywood on the walls and ceiling. The ground floor consists of the house’s polished concrete slab, while the upper floor features pine planks.
The facade color is an innovation, a mix of traditional Swedish paint (“slamfärg”) and tar paint. The humid climate of the west coast and the desire for a colored wooden roof inspired the idea of experimenting with a hybrid paint. The first layers are painted with Falu Red paint, and the final coat is red tar paint.
The project is nominated for the Rödfärg prize 2024
