Villa Hamnfyren is a private residence on Sweden’s west coast, perched on cliffs overlooking the open sea. The design of the house is deeply rooted in three key site conditions:

1. The western horizon remains completely open, offering uninterrupted views of the sea.

2. The house is exposed to the harsh coastal climate, with relentless winds sweeping across the bare granite cliffs throughout the year.

3. Local zoning regulations placed strict limits on the allowable building envelope.

In response, the design extends the living spaces outdoors, emphasizing outdoor spaces to create the sense of a home that feels larger than its indoor footprint. The form of the building shapes sheltered outdoor rooms, while large windows frame views, integrating both the interior and exterior spaces.

The material palette is restrained, with the exterior reduced to solely brick and glass. The gray Kolumba brick subtly blends with the surrounding granite, while the expansive glazing reflects and captures the light of long summer evenings, softening the boundary between structure and sky. This creates an immersive experience—living within the landscape, protected yet constantly surrounded by the ever-changing weather.

A close collaboration between the structural engineer, brick supplier, and builder resulted in a refined finish where high-quality brickwork allowed for the near-elimination of sheet metal details, heightening the purity of the building’s form.
